When the stem dies following flowering should I keep the root stock in the hope that it will regrow or is the whole plant finished

You've certainly nothing to lose by keeping it. I'd keep a picture record of it, too.

I've been growing since 1993 (20 years) and had flowers twice. One in 2006 and two this year

Have you got any to replace the old stems.

The clump has 7 stems, so there will still be 5 to carry on
