As people have said, it really depends where you are in the UK. I have a number of tree ferns that have been in the ground since the 1990's, I have never protected any of them and have not lost any. However, I would say that if I had protected with for example fleece, I may have been able to retain the previous years growth which would have given a better overall look.

Looks like a majority are not wrapping as standard. Like you say Dave regional and local variations in weather mean you can't treat your olants the same as someone else does.
Most wanted list - Any Young Trachycarpus and/or fern.

It would be interesting if we could gather the data of county locations to see if there where any trends :)

If it was a database we'd be ok, but very difficult on a forum

The way it would work with a database is ask everyone to fill out a record, which may ask all the questions we have in the survey, but could also ask for County, No of times protected last winter, coldest temperature etc. etc

Then you could query of all those 'winging it' what counties were they in. If 10 people are winging it, but live in Cornwall, Somerset and Dorset there probably is no problem. If those winging it are all in West Midlands different story
Best regards
