That's how I get my pot-plunged Brugs and Nanas out of the ground in Autumn. They root through the pots and once the pressure is enough come out of the ground with a surprising "leap", so I reckon an engine crane should be fine for your lift. Its aqeard to get alongside / around the plant - we put two plants where we want the crane's wheels to run so we can roll it out to then manoeuvre it onto a trolley.
