Don't worry Coddy, just cut them off and new ones will take their place.

I removed 2 'aborted' croziers last year on advice from people here and new ones were visible within 2-3 weeks, fully opened soon after.

He has to go back to the detention center, they only let him out now and again.

I'd recommend a huge handful of straw in the Dicksonia crowns. The emerging fronds can easily move it out the way if it's warm... But if there is frost the straw will be the perfect blanket.

We had a fantastic hail storm last week, some of the biggest hailstones I've ever seen, and they lasted in the shade for hours. I washed away the ice from my more tender plants.

Not far from you Paul and its all unnecessary, my Dicksonia antarctica have had no protection all winter and they still have last years fronds intact & undamaged.
The Cyatheas have been out for a month now and they are OK as well.
We took last years leaves off the TRex yesterday just cos they were tatty.
