Mine are similar Kris. The main thing may be the time to bulk up and get going. Seems they are earlier in a sunny position than in shade. Pink China is also one of the earliest to start under glass, so may get a real head start to plant out after the frosts.

I left one in the ground with an attached plant on a stolon for the winter. However, I dug it up last month and potted it to give it a head start in the greenhouse. Three new leaves already.

I have some in the shade that I haven't uncovered due to lack of time. I will get round to it this week before the slugs get to them....

Starting to establish as a good "doer" plant. I truely hardy tropical.

I took a little pup and put it in my prop over winter..I have tried my best ti kill this thing and nothing does it..not rot not cold or moist and warm..nothing..finally I stopped and it has 3 new leaves lol. things just to hardy. Id love to see one in a zone 5 un protected to see what it does.

Here is a pic of the furthest advanced ones in the garden. These were protected by a Waggie palm and the back of the arbour. All the ones I dug out around the Hiniba are on a prop base and doing well.

The ones in the ground, do you expect them to spread and be a permanent feature of the garden or do you move them about each year?

so can these plants be permantley planted outside then?

I think the one that I dug up and housed would only have two leaves if left in the ground. But I wonder, seeing Dave's plucky shoots coming up, if the gain of an extra (larger) leaf at the expense of the deeper pink in the stem is actually worth it.

By comparison, Burgundy stem and Fontenescii which have stayed inside all winter are well ahead with larger sized leaves.

I plan to harden off the Pink China taken inside on the sunny patio around mid- April for a couple of weeks before returning it as a ground plant at the beginning of May

Nothing at all on any of mine and from what I can see they're a bit squidgey.
