Trachycarpus Soil Height ?

Post by bwelton »

Hi there,

I have a few Trachycarpus’s (2.5 to 3.5m trunks) in large containers.

What should the soil level be at the base of the Trunk ?

Should the bottom trunk roots be showing or covered in soil ?

Many thanks

Hello Bob and welcome to the forum.
In my opinion the roots should not be showing above the soil as this will expose them to the air and probability of drying out and drying. Like any plant that you buy it is always a good idea to plant to at least to the depth the plant was in the pot

Thx, I did get them like that already, but wondered if the soil should be higher or if that was the way roots reach out at the base like some other plans.

Bob, good advice from jim but lots of palm's have ariel root's that happily live above ground level...nothing to worry about.

Both the guys are right as trachys don't seem to be to fussy, however as a personal preference if I were replanting them I would plant them deeper and cover the roots just because I could. icon_thumright

Bob, I had a spare hour today so was thinning out my Jungle, which enabled me to get to the base of my biggest Trachycarpus, 3 meter trunk. There were a mass of roots above the ground, this is a palm that grows very well so obviously it is not detrimental icon_thumright .
