I've air layered the side shoots on my Scheffie quite a few times over the years but this one is by far the biggest at over 4ft wide. I started it earlier in the season last year. By the end of october / early september i detached the air layer and potted it up into a 3ltr pot. Wasn't expecting much in the way of further development but over the last few weeks the roots have romped away in the pot . Very pleasantly surprised ............

An exciting and timely post, I have a S.enneaphylla that needs 'cutting back' and air layering the longer stems looks a good option before hand!
How much, if at all, did you wound the stem and did you use a rooting hormone?

Chad , i scrape through the layers of the stem on one side and apply root hormone. The sphag moss is soaked in a weak liquid seaweed and squeezed. There's other methods of wounding as you know, like cutting a wedge for example but as the plant is outside, i didn't want to reduce the structural strength and have it potentially snap off in the winda
, particularly as this one is 4ft across. I must have done twenty or so Taiwaniana in the last 2/3 seasons, all 100% success.
Must say your S.enneaphylla looks grand and not something i've come across.
Will have to try and source one.

I think Mark Fillan who runs Tuckermarsh Nursery in Devon has them.Arlon Tishmarsh wrote: ↑Wed Jan 15, 2020 6:25 am Must say your S.enneaphylla looks grand and not something i've come across.

He seems to have stopped retail trade, but is worth contacting if Crug don't have it anymore.
There are pictures of it in flower here.
I have a few of this year's berries left if you want seed.
