Schefflera delavyi pruning/propogation
I have a Schefflera delavyi that could do with being reduced in size. It is currently one large trunk. Is it safe to remove some of the top? Can you propogate the surplus? Thanks for your advice.

As with all cutting back it sometimes goes wrong but usually Schefflera resprout even from old wood.
The 'head' will make a good cutting, but they are sometimes slow to root so need a frame or case to keep humidity up around the leaves until there is root formed. I reduce the leaves drastically on taking cuttings from Schefflera.
You could 'air layer' it which would give you a rooted cutting and then a pruning when you remove the rooted cutting.

Would you put the cut head straight into water? Or compost?

Personally I would pot it into a multipurpose/perlite 50:50 compost, but I know of people who always root Schefflera in water in glass vessels on their window sills.
And welcome to the board,

And as an after thought, if you are cutting back hard, the bare stem between where you cut and the leafy head is worth potting in sections too, they often root and then shoot even from quite old and 'chunky' sections. Not guaranteed, but worth a go!
