Trachycarpus crown fiber (pics)

Post by Las Palmas Norte »

I can't recall discussion regarding the differences with crown fiber as it emerges and becomes visible. Here are two examples from my garden, both are Trachycarpus fortunei at roughly the same age.
One shows a tight and gathered pattern, the other loose, hairy and a rather open habit.
Just another in the vast variation in this genus.

Cheers, Barrie.

Nice detailed pics Barrie.
Suppose it will only be a few months before everyone is raving about the latest Trachycarpus Bearded Barrie.
It is one of the many attractive features that make Palms so intesting, particularly to novices, like me. No one every raves about slight variations in C.Leylandii.

On A slightly more on topic note, are the leaf shapes the same on the two plants?

Barrie, your first picture looks like a Wagnerianus is there a difference in the fibers between waggies and Fortunei!

Sad person that I am, I have just been out to look at my trachies. I have both, but the more fluffy, hariy types are on large leaved fortunei, where as the the other type are on smaller leaved more waggie-ish looking palms. Just an obsevation

Edit: just answered the previous note I think
Best regards

Well the first pic is not T. wagnerianus but it has a more compact growth habit, thicker trunk, slightly smaller stiffer leaves.

The second pics is from a palm with a very open habit, thin trunk, and large leaves that have drooping leaflets.

Cheers, Barrie.

An overview of each palm shows the different traits that correspond with the crown fiber.
