Don, a house not too far from me had some large trees felled close to the road, instead of trying to get the stump out, they were carved mushroom shaped, look quite good too.
Another tree also close by was damaged, I think by lightning, instead of felling it some artist has really carved it up, theres an eagle on top and faces coming down the trunk, mind you this one is around 16/20 foot tall.

How about carving a seat out of it.

Hollow it out and convert it into a planter perhaps?
