As we all suspected it is a C. Humilis. I picked it up this morning and with the rootball it stands about 5 1/2 foot. For £30 thats not a bad buy. Its got a few suckers which i will remove and it also solves the problem of whether to remove the suckers on my other, i can now grow one as a multi and this one as a single stem.

Edit: apologies, have copied this to "Ebay Trachycarpus" where i mean't to put it

Jo, I can't remember the Fushia name, maybe Maddame something it is a huge spreading bush, far to big for the area really, I have to contantly cut it back in Summer/Autumn as it grow across the path  I'm going to take some cutting this year as I have to move it later but don't want to lose it. Here is a pic of the flowers taken 23/Dec/2006

Keith, yes it does flower. but does not set seed as it is male. I have two flowering Chamarops in the back garden but both are male. Can't win 'em all  It currently has 9 flower heads

The one I have Dave flowered last year and then sent out a couple of small spathes of seeds but this year no flowers or seeds. Could this be because the palm was pollinated last year by another palm at the garden centre when all together? Has not flowered this year because it is now on it's own?

Surely if it flowered it should do this again without the need for another palm? So why flower one year and then not the next, I am confused

The Palm should flower regardless of another palm being in the area, Keith. I'm not sure how a plant could tell if another of the same species was nearby. icon_scratch

It may just be settling in, as it may have been growing in vastly different conditions when it flowered before. If grown in Spain or Italy the weather we are having now would be early spring not late spring. After a very mild winter as 2006/7 my Chamaerops flowered in Feb, just 2 spaths, but then again in May as normal.

Ok, thanks very much for the advice Dave, just hope it flowers next year. I was actually surprised to see it in flower as it is not a very big specimen.

Cheers

Sorry to dig up a relatively old thread. But what are "suckers"? Are these the leaves?

I did Google it via Google images, but I just found some rather rude images, which unfortunately, were not very helpful.

Suckers are new stems growing from the base of the main stem.
