Washingtonia Robustas 8" of snow = bad news! + garden pics!
Evening guys,
So if my Robusta's make it through this i'll be very impressed. Had 8" of snow in Manchester today on top of 2 weeks of snow/ice/frost.
My fleece wrapping probably isn't doing too much good right now as the Robustas are completely buried!
They were only £5 from b+q and I certainly wasn't moving them after i'd put all my compound down.
Yesterday was -8 on the car dash which is the coldest i've seen it this year and then today -0.5 and 20 minutes digging my car out to get to work
The huge cordy which I transplanted seems to be holding up (after looking very sorry for itself for 2 months) and the Pheonix palms seem to be unfazed by the whole deep freeze.
Time will tell
I can't help but love this weather though
Heres a end of summer pic, i'm off out with the camera for some "after" pics!

Re: Washingtonia Robustas - 8" of snow = bad news!
At that size i personally wouldn't hold my breath for those washys surviving.

Re: Washingtonia Robustas - 8" of snow = bad news!
They are seedlings Cordy and won't take much more than -3C at a single time, but night after night with almost freezing days probably no chance especially with -8C thrown in
Best regards
Dave

How about the Pheonix's, just been out and they're totally covered!
Re: Washingtonia Robustas - 8" of snow = bad news!
-8 is their limit at a more mature size. I lost a 6 footer last year with a fleece on.
Re: Washingtonia Robustas - 8" of snow = bad news!
Right heres a pic of the big cordy after the move, with loss of some of the tap root
and leaning heavily/bent trunk
some pics from outside coming up...

You might be lucky, but I would expect the worst.cordyman wrote:How about the Pheonix's, just been out and they're totally covered!

Hopefully its not too late for you, but cant you get a few canes banged in the ground around those palms of yoursand wrap em round with something?
Re: Washingtonia Robustas - 8" of snow = bad news!
First the good news, removed all the excess leaves on the cordy at the end of summer (which went brown quite soon after the move anyhow) and she's looking very healthy & a lot straighter even with a igloo block of snow in the crown
Cordy in the back garden close to the house where the snow isn't as deep
Flax, two more cordys, and some buried bamboo
Fargesia Jumbo seems to have shed all the snow and back to upright (love the sky in this pic!)
The funky reed
Two buried pheonix's, and hidden Robustas! The rock almost buried too

If i were you i would remove as much snow off those washys and Phoenix canariensis_CIDP as you can, then, for just tonight, stick some bins or similar upside down over them, it'll give them half a chance to recover. Then tomorrow you can get some protection sorted out.
Re: Washingtonia Robustas - 8" of snow = bad news!
we got it light to everyone else it seems, 2 inches we got here, well the south looks like its going to get battered. Even the south coast is getting pasted right now!
Re: Washingtonia Robustas - 8" of snow = bad news!
Thanks for advice,
i've uncovered the robustas and the side leaves have snapped under the weight of the snow, best to leave the leaves on broken then prune them off i guess?
Just searching for some big containers
i read 40cm for the south over the next 3 days?!

It's only been snowing here for 2 1/2 hours and the leaves on my trachys are bent almost to the ground. I might pop out and shake the snow off before i go to bed.
