Elephant Ear/ coco yam tubers from Caribbean shop

Post by Sat »

I bought these tubers from local caribeen shop for £3.50. Sold as Coco yam. Taking advice from the below website. The grocer does have high turnover of coco yam so should be fresh.

Will pot these up and see how they do.

Nice one rob, when did you plant them and how long after the leaves appeared?

Also did you put your pots outside or kept indoors?

I was considering planting some tubers in the ground in late march and see how they far? Do you ( or others) think this will be ok?

i got them to sprout potted up indoors and they withered away when first placed outside in the pot... but when it warmed up it grew again, so i reckon not to be in too much of a rush to get it started or keep it indoors longer.

Coco Yam is a common name so does not necessarily mean the same plant depending on where you goet it from, but your's Rob are Xanthasoma from South America

One of the advantages of living in an area with a large ethnic comunity, unfortunately there aren't many here,so consequently no ethnic shops.I even went in the huge Tesco at Tower park in Poole the other night,no taro/eddoes.

If you find a good shop Lee perhaps you might give us a hint as to where it is. :D icon_thumright

My eddoes and coco yam have been potted in a pot and kept indoors for heat.

So far all that is happening is some mould white stuff growing on the top.

Have not watered it since potted as the soil still seem damp?

Anything else/ different I should do?

Also what are the chances of theses growing if just planted outside in say MAY?
