Yesterday I bought a new Hibiscus hybrid from Esveld in Boskoop. Its Hibiscus 'Resi', a crossbreed of Hibiscus paramutabilis and H. syriacus 'Woodbridge'. Both parent plants are winterhardy in my climate. And Hibiscus 'Resi' get up to 4 to 5 meters, pink flowers up to 15 cm in diameter from Juli till Oktober, fastgrowing and winterhardy. Can be planted is sun and semi shade as well. Well all according to the discription
This crossbreed has been made in Hengelo in The Netherlands. My plant is full with flowerbuds so I hope this will be a winner! It will be a winterhardy Hibiscus getting closest to the (sub) tropical Hibiscus mutabilis.
In the past I had a crossbreed of Hibiscus paramutabilis with a white Hibiscus syriacus. It was also fastgrowing with white flowers and a dark heart. Well when I had to move to another place I have tried to replant it but it died. But it seems its not so difficuld to make crossbreeds of Hibiscus syriacus with H. paramutabilis.
My crossbreed was a spontaniously one growing under a Hibiscus syriacus in a neighbours garden. So when you grow both species in your garden you can get hybrids as well. The bees or humblebees even do the work for you !
Hibiscus syriacus seeds itself here in gardens by the way. So its not uncommon to find them under H. syriacus bushes.
Strange that there are not allready a lot of hybrids arround!

Re: Hibiscus 'Resi'.
It's an interesting line of breeding and hopefully brings the larger flowers and faster growth of paramutabilis to the wider colour ranges and ease of flowering in the syriacus cultivars. Both syriacus and paramutabilis are hardy by almost anyone's standards and relatively little seems to have been done with paramutabilis. In many ways I think it's a nicer shrub and has more of the 'exotic look' than syriacus, but it does tend to flower at the top of an eventually rather tall, very leafy plant. Maybe using it as a pollinator on syriacus cultivars will give us a new generation of more handsome, easily managed and truly hardy garden Hibiscus.

Re: Hibiscus 'Resi'.
There are several crosbreeds of Hibiscus paramutabilis with H. syriacus arround. They have some nice ones in the US. And said to be hardy from zone 5 climates up, so could survive -25 C!

Re: Hibiscus 'Resi'.
I bought an Hibiscus at Tenerife airport last september,
I duly nursed it by misting during the winter. Its leaves grew very little but when the bud came about may it was long and by the size I knew the flower would be awesome..
...it was. It seemed bigger than the plant it grew from lmaooooo But the strange thing is all four flowers which came later after each one only last one day, quite like a day lily
Had I not photoed it I would have missed it. All that hard work all winter for a day.
