Is my new palm a washingtonia robusta?
Is my new palm a washingtonia robusta?
Hi whilst in town today i came across a washingtonia for 5 pounds outside of asda's, I was shocked at the price with it being a nice size and multi headed. All it said on the tag was washingtonia but not which kind. Here is a pic of it.

you will never know, theres too much hydridisation out there for starters, the best way to get true robusta is get some seed from a reputable seller

The plant comes from a supplier called hebo plants. I checked there web site and it was just listed as a washingtonia on there. By the sounds of things It could be anything then? still i cant complain for a fiver.

Looks a good specimen for the price.
Whether filifera or robusta, I'm told will only become apparent with age,
robusta has fewer threads on the leaves and a narrower trunk than filifera.

I would be happy with either one really. I too think its a fine palm. I really couldnt believe it when I see the price. And there are plenty more of them as well. If anyone else if going to asda then have a look they will probably sell them at your store.

Rooted on from another plant,
Once it 'took' then it was planted by the roots it made..hey presto a new plant.
One theory anyway.
It looks a nice plant, clean for the price.
Enjoy San!

I'd say it looks more Filifera than Robusta. Robusta does have a slimmer trunk , even at smaller sizes. I've grown filifera seed only to find i've a 4 year old Robusta.sanatic1234 wrote:Hi whilst in town today i came across a washingtonia for 5 pounds outside of asda's, I was shocked at the price with it being a nice size and multi headed. W. robusta have maroon leaf bases & W. filifera are plain green... though yours may be too small to make out the differences yet...

Absolutely ... I'd bet my last dollar these are robusta just the same.Nathan wrote:W. robusta have maroon leaf bases & W. filifera are plain green... though yours may be too small to make out the differences yet...

I'm with Barrie here and can't really believe this is up for discussion, Filifera (real ones)is an absolute nightmare to come by and it is extremely unlikely a grower is chucking them out of Holland for like a Euro a pieceLas Palmas Norte wrote:Absolutely ...
