Palm trees on Google street view

Post by boybeck »

I just happened to be looking up an address on google street view in San Diego and was suddenly struck with jealousy at the amount of palm trees there are around. I bet no one gives them a second thought over there! Take a virtual walk down the street and see what you can spot :-)

What are these palms? can we get them here?

Queen palm ... Syagrus romanzoffiana. Light, infrequent frosts to -4°C OK, beyond that expect trouble. Inquire locally.

Cheers, Barrie.

Many of us have tried and failed here Barry. If it could be persuaded to make decent growth in summer we might have a chance, but getting 4 or 5 decent fronds in a very good summer is not enough to make up for those lost in an average winter. Various forms have been tried over the years - Santa Catarina/Silver Queen etc. and to my knowledge none have made sufficient summer growth to suggest they are long term palms. I've had more success with Archontophoenix cunninghamiana than this!

Where's the Jubaea gone now!!!! If you click on the link for the Jubaea you can see it in the round-about. Then try double clicking to zoom in and it dissappears! Did it not survive or was this before it was planted?

Are you sure it wasn't planted just recently? It could very well be that the other images were taken prior to it being planted....

It's a shame they don't label their street view images with a proper date...
