Finally found someone to take me to a patch of opuntia. no idea what type they are but def winter hardy. they were on a large rock outcropping in a pine forest and seem to be very healthy. I have 2 acual plants and about 15 pads I can root. I will be happy to send anyone rooted pads once there ready if interested.

I used to grow opuntia and they even flowered, but I wouldn't grow them again.
It's not those large needles which hurt but those little inconspicuous little brown ones. They literally get under your skin and want to stay there. Also, snails love to eat them. They caused so much damage that I decided not to grow dinner for them or get prickled anymore.
