Agave havardiana and Yucca gloriosa
Agave havardiana and Yucca gloriosa
I finished my arid bed in the Spring and misplaced the IDs for my two of the bigger plants .... just found them!! Agave havardiana and Yucca gloriosa. I would really appreciate a few snippets of advice, particularly overwintering. My intention is to cloche them to keep dry.
Re: Agave havardiana and Yucca gloriosa
My Harvi is too big for a cloche, been OK uncovered for the last 2 years, close to the house and planted in a gravel pit.

That's encouraging, thanks. Mine are only in normal soil with grit added and improved drainage in the planting hole. What do you think?

The gloriosa is hardy
Re: Agave havardiana and Yucca gloriosa
The Gregg Starr book has Harvardiana as hardy to -12C but I would try to provide shelter to keep it dry through the coldest months.
Re: Agave havardiana and Yucca gloriosa
Thanks - a cloche for the Havardiana it is, and the Yucca can take whatever is thrown at it!! I also have some 'hardy' opuntia out there which will be cloched as well, since previous ones didn't like the wet either.
Re: Agave havardiana and Yucca gloriosa
I don't protect my Opuntias. Some don't make it though and even humifusa/compressa suffers damage some winters.
Re: Agave havardiana and Yucca gloriosa
When I grew Opuntias, I didn't protect them either BUT....I found that snails loved to eat them so the damage from the snails plus the damage to my hands (from those little brown spines) forced me to evict them!
