In my opinion UK is not the best region to keep cactus outside. They need warm climate while UK there is very often raining and temperatures are jumping from high to low. However, there are some varieties of cactus that can survive. You can try opuntia, cylindropuntia and echinocereus because they are a cold-hardy cacti.

I know of two people with large outdoor cactus gardens. One person is in the south, one in West Yorkshire. The have built raised beds with lots of drainage in the bottom. Its the wet combined with the cold that is a problem.

A couple of people on here grow them. At least one person has theirs under a pergola type structure with roof to keep the rain off.
