Colocasia gigantea 'Thai Giant'
Re: Colocasia gigantea 'Thai Giant'
Looking good mine seemed fine until Christmas then a rapid down hill spiral which resulted in total rot
Will get a new one this season and hope for better results

Re: Colocasia gigantea 'Thai Giant'
Carl, I have to admit, this is the most Alocasia like, Colocasia I have grown. Definitely seems to want to go dormant over the dark period of winter, and seems to need bottom heat to get it going again.
Best regards
Dave

I cannot agree Dave. It's the first time I have Thai Giant and must say it behaves like any other collie. It grows nicely in a normal room temperature unlike alocasias which have to be "cooked"

Perhaps you have a spare heated room, which most people don't have. My conservatory with min of around 7 to 10C was too cold for them. and they wet dormant. These were the only Collies to do that in the conservatory.countrylover wrote:I cannot agree Dave. It's the first time I have Thai Giant and ust say it behaves like any other collie. True I do not have a conservatory but I am also surprised my plants are still alive. They've been thru a lot

Re: Colocasia gigantea 'Thai Giant'
Oh just realised I haven't updated this recently
30th March 2nd leaf open but not full size yet. It is on a heat mat in the conservatory Now that spring has finally sprung, the prop area has moved out into the Lunar Module with 2 x 1.1m heatmats on 50% 15 mins on, 15 mins off. It has now grown a 3rd leaf which has just opened, so we'll have to see how big that one gets

Well done for keeping it going over winter.

A little update.
One week outdoors and my colocasia decided to bloom.

Re: Colocasia gigantea 'Thai Giant'
if you can keep it outside it will usually self pollinate or is pollinated easy by insects..easier than any other calo I know of. hand pollination is very easy as well due to the large scale of everything.
Re: Colocasia gigantea 'Thai Giant'
Oh no, I'm gonna cut the flower off. I want it to grow huge leaves and as we know these plants tend to slow down with growth while flowering
