Colocasia gaoligongensis, one of the most hardy
Re: Colocasia gaoligongensis, one of the most hardy
what do you do with yours in winter?
Re: Colocasia gaoligongensis, one of the most hardy
Mulching is something I always promise myself I'll do every year but never get around to. It looks a mess, but i always leave all the dead plant material to fall to the ground in the borders and leave it there until the worst of the cold weather is over.
I'm sure it provides a certain degree of protection against frost. A clump of Esculenta that I normally would dig up got left out last winter and has returned OK this summer albeit a little smaller.

well last year was a very short winter.
i will most likely stick to mulching plants for their first couple of years until they get built up a bit.

Very wise Ken. They are very tough, and Tony Palmer built up quite a few in his garden, over near Stockport I believe, but lost all outside in Dec 2010. so there are limits. The mulch has to be thick enough to stop the rhizome freezing. If severe weather strikes just throw something.... anything, over the area to slow frost penetration down.Mr List wrote:
