See This Topic Seems they can come back from almost nothing. The Kitchen is quite humid so possibly stops complete dehydrationPalmer wrote:
Thanks Dave I’m going to try this method!
Does it work with small rhizomes too?
I’m just worried small rhizomes would become dehydrated.

Cheers Dave, I will give ago then, I guess it’s also easier to keep an eye on them too!
I over wintered about 30 small C.gaoligongensis in the loft one winter and lost them all, they just dried up.
That’s odd because I also over winter Amorphophallus and Suramatum “Indian giant” in the loft and I’ve never lost any of them, large or small.

I suspect gaoligongensis is different to most Colocasia. Most go dormant in Tropical/Subtropical dry seasons, so are dry induced dormancy. I think gaoli may be induced into dormancy by cold, but doesn't dry out.

Just a thought Dave. Do you think keeping the dry colocasias in the kitchen is a good idea? Maybe they will start into growth at a random time over winter if the humidity is high from all the cooking and having windows closed?

Don't know Chris, but as I have a few of these now, I can try and see If they start off in Jan that will not be too much of a problem. If they just try to continue to grow, they may get a little on the large sideYorkshire Kris wrote:Just a thought Dave. Do you think keeping the dry colocasias in the kitchen is a good idea? Second thoughts..... They seem to just elongate the spike rather than grow leaves when out of compost. The leaves tend to come after it has produced roots in compost.

I'm trying with one too. I have it drying in the greenhouse near the heater.Dave Brown wrote:Don't know Chris, but as I have a few of these now, I can try and see If they start off in Jan that will not be too much of a problem. Even if the main rhizome doesn't rot, if the main shoot dies for some reason, they will sprout around the sides
