Alocasia x portora (portadora) comes inside for winter
I love monster leaves and this plant has those. Also it is one of the tougher Alocaisa growing in cooler conditions than many Once it gets going it is quite fast.
Alocasia portadora, Big Daddy, was bought at Amulree and planted out in June. put on some impressive growth over the summer, but now has to come inside for protection over the winter. I'm hoping with this start point next year it will get even bigger.

You must have a very understanding wife.
If I had a conservatory SWMBO would will it full of "design" rather than plants

Re: Big Daddy comes inside for winter
What a fabulous plant! I'd be only too happy if my OH brought one indoors for the winter. Alas, we too, have different points of view on overwintering indoors Are there any couples here that agree!?
Will you be squeezing anything else in there Dave & do you do it 'under cover'?

I have a few bits to bring in Jo, Strelizia nicolai, Helicoia bahia Phoenix roebelenii... not as they require +6C but they are too tall for elsewhere

How easy/hard are Heliconias to grow?
The only things I've brought in so far are my 4 Plumerias, but I'm going to have to make a start before it's too late!

Re: Big Daddy Alocasia comes inside for winter
Dave, it was quite heavy lifting it out of the hole and the soil was bone dry as it is in the lee of the bungalow. Then I added 2 inches of shingle to the bottom of the tub, then compost and watered it. Then 1 inch shingle on top.Dave in Warrington wrote:Like the plant Davemusa_monkey wrote: and i thought my wife was understanding

However, I did move it without the aid of the wife These are play tubs with handles, and being plastic they can be dragged quite easily.
Best regards

Gosh Dave what a monster!
My portadora has one slowly deteriorating leaf and has not grown at all since going in the ground 6 months ago. Im hoping that once the rain starts it will kick off but looking at yours really makes me wonder if your cool British climate is more conducive to tropicalesque gardening than the stinking hot tropics that I endure!

looks like my spare room dave
your portadora has stayed a lot greener than mine. i don't think they like sun so next year i'll do the same as you and keep it in the shade.
cheers

Thanks Bev that could be my problem. I might dig it up and move it somewhere more protected and see if it responds. Id hate to loose it especially after having seen Dave's glorious specimen.i don't think they like sun so next year i'll do the same as you and keep it in the shade.
