Chusquea culeou winter damage
Chusquea culeou winter damage
my Chusquea culeou has been severely burnt by decembers weather its about 80 percent topkilled.its hardiness rating is around -15C we had several -14C here and sustained cold periods for a few weeks at a time.has anyone else suffered the same with this bamboo and what is your experience of its performance regarding recovery in spring?
Re: Chusquea culeou winter damage
I bought a 3L culeou in January 2001 and then we had a sever cold snap in February when the temperature dropped to -14C and the top growth was killed and it did not come back.
However, yours is bigger and in the ground so I would not give up hope just yet Jacko.

Re: Chusquea culeou winter damage
cheers adam,i think it'll come back its just a shame as it was looking great before the cold.heres a pic taken just before the cold snap came
Re: Chusquea culeou winter damage
Yes, that was looking great before the cold Jacko!
I guess they are a bit like the Borinda bamboo with regards to dieback of the top growth.

Re: Chusquea culeou winter damage
doomed to be a small bushy plant if these cold winters persist.
Re: Chusquea culeou winter damage
a few people round here have lost theirs as well, exactly the same size
Most wanted list - Any Young Trachycarpus and/or fern.
Re: Chusquea culeou winter damage
I have 2, probably about a third the size of yours jacko .. but both have survived almost unscathed - they do have a degree of protection though. I'll go and get a pic tomorrow.
They even seem to have started culm production over the last few weeks! .... Hard to judge just how they'll do in the long run. Both are in around 2 years but were small initially.
Just hope they aclimatize well before any larger culms are raised above the parapet.....
