Aciphylla aurea

I bought four of these bare root last month. (Each about 3 inches tall). I potted them in sterile well drained compost with horticultural grit. All four have been attacked by some horrible looking worms (tiny maggots) - any ideas what they are/were - sorry no pics - I got rid of them quickly as I didn't want the blighters to attack any other plants. Could they have been in egg form when I got the plants or have I gone wrong somewhere? I don't think I overwatered them.
