well I got the best photos I could. mostly of the culms as I think that will give away its ID better than anything. I think I am going to try to harvest some of the smaller canes ( still 15+ft tall) around march before they shoot. the grove is much thicker than I first realized and it might be a bit hard getting it out.. here are a few pics let me know if anyone has a 100% ID on it.

to big to fit my hand around

after looking at alot of pictures and talking to a few people the best I can come up with is that its phyllostachys aureosulcata "yellow groove" bamboo. don't know if thats right but it seems pretty close.

Mike, its total wrong colouring for sulcata, plus far to thick. Sulcata does have the zig/zag effect but not the stripes. karl.

Bamboos can grow a lot thicker culms in the US (more heat) so my not be obvious to us in the UK what it is.

I`d go for yellow grove too. Just bought a few myself with yellower appearance but narrower. The give away is the yellow streak and the kinky cane.

ive just checked out this site http://www.lewisbamboo.com/yellowgr.html and now its looks like you could well have phyllostachys aureosulcata. i say this because of the zig zag culms.vivax doesnt do that.i didnt realise that aureosulcata can get that big in the USA.

Jacko, i have both, the spectabilis is a showstopper & a favorite of mine , it also grows faster than sulcata, well in my garden it does!, i find the zig/zag in both variaties stunning. The canes on mikes pic's show a slight white misting which i've not seen before?. karl.
