Terminating culms, pro's and con's?

Post by cordyman »

My x4 Robusta Campbells have finally started throwing up new culms, lots and lots of them icon_cheers

Some are coming up right next to the wall and pushing against the kerbstone slightly lifting it off  I've terminated around 20 culms across all 4 plants where ever they are right up against the wall under the kerbstones. Simply pruned them with secateurs.

Any downside of doing this, and will the energy saving on growing those culms be invested into current culms, or the late summer flush?

I think in Phyllostachys it promotes thicker culms in following flushes. Fargesia doesn't really get much thicker culms so probably wont make a difference.

ive had to prune loads of culms and rhizomes from one of my spectabilis over the years and it doesnt seem to bother the plant at all.quite ruthless pruning sometimes too.
