bamboos in the snow pictures
bamboos in the snow pictures
these are some shots i have just taken with our first snowfall this year today.i think bamboos look great with snow on them.but i have to shake it off because it gets to heavy and they flop all over the place (cant get up the garden path sometimes).so these shots are just before i shake the snow off.
Re: bamboos in the snow pictures
I agree that they do look pretty with a light dusting on them, but heavy, wet snow is a pain.
How much snow did you receive in the end?

Re: bamboos in the snow pictures
to much and they collapse and go flat under the weight of it if you don't have real thick cains that don't bend, unlike mine even with dew can bring them down, but your photo's do look lovely there.thanks for sharing them with us.

... or break! I usually have one or more snap under a wet snow load as was the case a few days back.Nick wrote:they collapse and go flat under the weight

Tom, I found, once they were down, they never seemed to go back up and look as good again, until new growth made it look better, I suppose the new growth feels any holes where it don't return to properly
Re: bamboos in the snow pictures
same as you tom i was out this morning shaking snow off.postman had fun getting up the path this morning most of mine can bend right over with no problem.its the vivax that i worry about the most as its thin walled culms can snap with too much snow weight and at 20ft i would hate that.had about an inch and a half of snow alltogether adam (so far).
Re: bamboos in the snow pictures
It snowed here last night as well Jacko.
Ended up with about 2 inches in the end.

Oooh ... you may want to rephrase that.Adam D wrote:Ended up with about 2 inches in the end.
ah right ... more to the topic, breakage from snow load on P. vivax which has thinner culm walls than P. bambusoides. Dispite this, only one culm has snapped after the last snow.
Hard to see clearly but the downward pointed culm snapped about 12' above ground.

Something about seeing snow covered Bamboo always reminds me of the 70's TV show Kung Fu, and the episode where he gets his graduation tattoos....
Tell you what though, any big losses in my garden this winter will be replaced with more hardy bamboo specimens.
I have a list..........
