Re: Musa "Mekong Giant"
Hi list, those available in the UK are just smallish plug plants and fairly nondescript at the mo, but I will post a pic of my two if you would like to see them!
Here is a link to the Brian’s Botanicals site.

Re: Musa "Mekong Giant"
i remember you got some a bit earlier than the rest so i was hoping yours would be a bit bigger than the ones here.
i have two from amulree.
i find the growth habbit a bit odd and i am not sure if this will be a problem in my small garden.

Not a problem, you just end up with an exotic street, rather than garden.Mr List wrote:i mean with it being a runner not a clumper

Impossible to tell...... my M. basjoo have been planted out for 19 years. I've had the Mekong Giant just over a month and is now 2 ft tall.gabriel wrote:How are Your Mekong Giants doing?

Re: Musa "Mekong Giant"
Mine has just gone outside to harden off before planting out in a week or so, like Dave`s it is around 2ft tall.
Re: Musa "Mekong Giant"
My Mekong’s are also about 2ft and like List pointed out they do look very similar to basjoo at the mo… although the last leaf has those characteristic little flaps of Itinerans!
The two I had sent from the US both died… the first didn’t survive the journey and the other the cat killed (don’t friggin ask) so I have two from Amulree.

Re: Musa "Mekong Giant"
mine in the garden is growing another new roller after these last few decent days. it is only about a foot tall, maybe 4 inch of pstem.
looking at it from above (easy since it is so small ) it seems a lot more spiral in the way the leaves have come out.
sikki seem to go 12 o'clock, 4 o'clock, eight o'clock this one seems more 12,2,4,6,8,....

Re: Musa "Mekong Giant"
You put things out far too small Ken, IMO. I'll be repotting mine, and it will be planted out next year.Mr List wrote:mine in the garden is growing another new roller after these last few decent days. it is only about a foot tall, maybe 4 inch of pstem.

Re: Musa "Mekong Giant"
looking good Dave
I'm glad to hear your not going to plant it out this year

Re: Musa "Mekong Giant"
I'm planting mine out as it is slightly bigger than the basjoo I bought at this time last year. Hardiness etc is supposed to be comparable to basjoo so I think it will be a good experiment. I'll see how brave I am when Winter comes as to whether I dig it up or not
Re: Musa "Mekong Giant"
don't you guys remember why i planted it out so early?
it had rotted roots even in 50/50 and i was looking after it waiting to plant it out when bigger.
if it survives the winter it will be hailed as hardy ,if not people can try with bigger plants
