Where to buy virus-free Canna cultivars?

Post by Shamone10 »

Can anyone recommend anywhere to buy virus-free canna plants or rhizomes? I know they will never be 100% virus free, but is anyone 99% sure of anywhere?

I bought a pack of tropicana and Red King Humbert the other day they're in a couple of 'Taylers' packets who seem to have shelves and shelves of various bulbs at most garden centres. Anyone had experience with cannas from them?

Hart canna is the place to look. They have a good website, you can buy seed, rhizomes or plants. They have a section on the website telling you all about the virus too.

Mine was. I bought a double plant from Homebase late summer. It was a belter, and flowered just as autumn came in. It did really well in height to say I was so late buying it.

Waiting to buy another from Homebase. I ordered one also from Desert to Jungle..Bonfire red.

I wouldn't buy theirs again, they have all shown various degrees of the virus from my experience. I'm sticking to species now, growing from seed each year as it doesn't seem to be transmitted via seed

Just so theres no confusion. It was the prepackaged Taylors stuff I'm on about

ive used hart canna for a few years now............... as a specialist nursery they know what they are doing and will destroy any diseased stock, otherwise it could wipe out their business......... so i trust them implicitly

ive also used jungle seeds / jungle plants in the past too....... again no issues what so ever

stick to reputable suppliers and you will be fine

Yes I had seen the hart canna website, the price put me off but I suppose its worthit to be so sure...

Ah i'll just keep the rhizomes I bought separate from my species i'm growing from seed. Any sign of virus and i'll just burn 'em.

The tropical series Red Bronze is doing really well from seed and is one of the few cultivars I know of that that can be grown reliably from the seed, let alone the only dark-leaved canna from seed I know of too.
