The stem is 17". Over an inch diameter so quite chunky. I'll plant it out next year, but pot up any resulting pups. Maybe I was expecting a tad more growth, we'll see what happens with an unrestricted root run

Here is mine, having a blast of an airing in mid winter. It took 4 attempts to take the pic, as it blew over before I could get far enough away to take the shot

It hasn't been left out of the leaves would be ripped off.

Another update after the looooong cold winterspring. Had to keep dry, and so lost all the leaves. Moved it from the LM to conservatory in early March as nothing was growing out there. Now grown a new leaf. Finally got around to repotting it, which I talked about doing last year, today, so now we'll see if it takes off icon_thumright

Yours looks like it’s off to a good start Dave… that’s not the case for my ziafui though, I left a couple in the poly and I’m sure they will be dead, coldest temp this winter was -9.2c
The rest have spent the winter in the loft and should have survived but they will have lost some size on them this time… it’s been a long winter up there this year.

-9.2C is quite a hardiness test :ahhh!: I suppose it depends on if the rhizome froze through.

Had to keep mine dry over winter as well. Just this week started to water it and will repot at the weekend, then get a pic up. Must say it really has shrunk!

Well as its still a very rare Musa it should be planted out in a frostfree polytunnel or conservatory. And then let it growth fast so it can produce many new plants. Those you can then try outside and for other people.
Well I would be happy to plant one here in the tropical butterflygarden. There banas grow very fast almost yearround. So from one plant you can get soon mass production. It seems this M. zaifui is very generous with new pups.

The more people whom grow it, the better.

Mine is now growing away fast, a new leaf every five days or so. Guess what, still no pups!

Well for outside growing you certainly need to mulch it heavely I guess! Even if Musa basjoo rhizomes get frozen its probably lethal to them!

Well I have never tried that actually...

Isn't it going to be a bit dry above a radiator Gilian ? I think if I tried that here it would become a Red Spider Mite banquet. Seems to grow in quite cool conditions for me.

Any Update Tony ?

Did they survive ?

Mine went form strength to strength this year, so seems a really good Banana coming good from a very late start icon_thumright

I took three pups off back in August, and all three have taken. Was torn between selling them due to the job situation, but the pioneer in me won out, and the mother plant will be planted out in a sheltered place in the garden next spring, with the pups kept as insurance
