I had a small Ensete overwintered in a 2 litre pot, which although late was doing quite well, however, like many plants it was overcome by the explosion in the slug population all hunting for succulent new shoots
The slugs got into the pseudostem and ate the middle out, leaving a hole where the growing point should have been. I didn't have time to investigate much and it was left in the Lunar Module for 2 months. Then last weekend I noticed it had grown another shoot from the hole.
Yesterday I got around to tidying it up, removing the old leaf bases, to find several new shoots coming from the rhizome There are roots emerging from the base of the new growth points, so I've buried them under new compost/perlite. These will be left for a week or so then I'll look at removing the sprouts to grow on as separate plants

Must be the first time anyone has ever been happy that slugs have munched growth point. Free plants, happy days!
Re: Ensete Maurelii sprouts pups after spring slug attack
you do quite well with Ensete pups
Re: Ensete Maurelii sprouts pups after spring slug attack
Excellent Dave,
If you have any stand them on pebble. I have my Ensete, Basjoo, and Swartkof on pebbles and no damage.
I need to take an image of all three, this is flanked by the other two..

How effective the slugs are seems to be dependent on the growth rate at the time Kris, I have had this happen twice with Maurelii in spring when growth was slow. 'Montbeliardii' on the other hand is faster growing even when cold, so outgrows the munchers. Hiniba is just plain ol' toughYorkshire Kris wrote:Next time get the slugs out on your 'Montbeliardii' and hiniba.

Re: Ensete Maurelii sprouts pups after spring slug attack
My standard Ensete Ventricosum which is still in a pot has produced a pup but slugs or snails took no part in that process.
Re: Ensete Maurelii sprouts pups after spring slug attack
Some of mine are being ravaged by something eating all the leaves!!!
Most wanted list - Any Young Trachycarpus and/or fern.
Re: Ensete Maurelii sprouts pups after spring slug attack
Nothing munched here except for my 3 brugs and sunflowers.
