Too late to buy a Dicksonia antarctica and pot up?

Post by Rachelpalm »

Hello
thinking of buying a tree fern, Dicksonia antarctica and potting it up. Do they like sun or shade or abit of both? Is it too late to buy one now as the roots will not have long enough to grow and get it through winter ok? Are the ok in pots? Anyone know of any good places to buy them? Can you bring them indoors over winter or are they easy to protect outdoors? I live near Great Yarmouth

Thanks

Rachel, a good and cheap supplier is seagrave nurseries http://www.seagravenurseries.co.uk/products/tree-ferns . They start at £20 per foot.

Hello
the £40 looks great value. Would the fronds grow back very fast?

Thanks

If there's a set of knuckles already formed you may be lucky and get another flush. If not it'll more than likely be next year

Hello
I have a tall square terrarcotta pot up side of my house which is in shade apart from about 12 till 2pm each day. Thinking of putting a tree fern in that. Do they grow lots of roots? Do garden centres cut the roots off the trunks and they then grow back when planted? Sorry to ask so much but do not want to kill the thing off by planting it wrong,

Cheers

Yeah my sanfernando Dicksonia antarctica has stopped flushing now, but my sanfernatic is still pushing the odd one out, i think i have had about 17, 18 fronds of that this year where as my other has only produced 8. Good luck with your buy :) seagraves is really good and you may get a chunky one :)

Most of them come as logs as at Seagraves but more often than not i think the diy sheds like b & q come rooted. The very first one's i bought were 2no 2ft trunks from b&q. I put them into half oak barrels. 2 yrs later it was chocka with a mat of roots, completely filled the barrel. If you're in E. Anglia, wouldn't it be better to go to Amulree or Urban Jungle etc. Perhaps you could pick one up and bring it home fronded or Simon may deliver on his own wagon.

It probably would make sense but they are not as cheap as seagraves nurseries. and everyone always likes a bargain :)

Very true San!

I reckon I'll be ordering a couple or 3 from Seagraves next March so I can pot them up and get them fronded for next summer.

Hello
think I will pop to Amulree Sunday to see what they have. I live about 35 minutes away from them. I get so excited when I go there. I love it. Thanks for all your replies and help.
