The Bamboo Ferns (Coniogramme)
The Bamboo Ferns (Coniogramme)
I purchased a beautiful fern called Coniogramme japonica 'Flavomaculata' from this year's Gardeners' World Live show. As there hasn't been any topics or mention of these on the forum I thought I'd bring them to everyone's attention.
They don't yet appear to be easily available in the UK. After looking further into Bamboo Ferns, I discovered there are three main species; emeiensis, intermedia and japonica. All are said to be hardy to around zone 7b (around -15c) so should make reliable ferns for the UK. All are evergreen and vary between 18 to 36 inch tall.
Coniogramme emeiensis Coniogramme intermedia Coniogramme intermedia 'Rasha' Coniogramme intermedia 'Shishi' Coniogramme intermedia 'YoroiMusha' Coniogramme japonica Coniogramme japonica 'Flavomaculata' Further reading -

Re: The Bamboo Ferns (Coniogramme)
I have not heard of them, but they look cool and something that I would put in my garden (if I had the room).
Looking at the pictures again I can understand why they are called "bamboo" ferns as the leaves are very much like Fargesia and Phyllostachys.

Re: The Bamboo Ferns (Coniogramme)
Great looking ferns Kyle... I think I'm going to have to look out for some of those now.
Re: The Bamboo Ferns (Coniogramme)
They are fantastic - definitely on the look out as they have a real C. radicalis/microdspadix feel, but would be a lot hardier. It seems they are rhizomous, but presumably not 'rampant' like many bamboos?
Re: The Bamboo Ferns (Coniogramme)
I don't think rampant is anything to worry about. From the snippets of information on the net, they seem to be among the least invasive ferns there are. The reference to bamboos is just the appearance of the leaves.ourarka wrote:It seems they are rhizomous, but presumably not 'rampant' like many bamboos?
Re: The Bamboo Ferns (Coniogramme)
Kyle, did you get the name of the nursery on your label when you bought yours?
Re: The Bamboo Ferns (Coniogramme)
Yes, it was from Fibrex Nurseries. I've just checked and they don't list any of these ferns on their website. It'll be worth giving them a call to see if they have some available.Nigel Fear wrote:Kyle, did you get the name of the nursery on your label when you bought yours?

Also just checked RHS Planrfinder and they only list Fibrex as a supplier of these.

Re: The Bamboo Ferns (Coniogramme)
I really like the look of these - desperately hope someone finds a UK supplier.
Re: The Bamboo Ferns (Coniogramme)
I've planted some of these recently:

has a similar leaf form to some of the coniogramme ferns, and grows to 60cm high, and is evergreen

Re: The Bamboo Ferns (Coniogramme)
I got one of these too, from Morrisons of all places. £3.50 for a 2L pot. They have great character and stand out over almost all the other ferns I've got.Dim wrote:I've planted some of these recently:

Arachniodes simplicior East Indian Holly Fern Plug £2.95
Evergreen. Eventual height to 60cm. Hardy in milder areas (USDA zone 7)
A glorious distinctive fern, hardy in most parts of the British Isles and Ireland, also makes a tremendous house plant for cooler areas. Sometimes erroneously offered as A. aristata 'Variagata', this naturally variagated species will make an impact in anyone's garden! The photo shows the mature fronds, the creamy stripe lights up the fern or herbaceous border. This fern enjoys partial shade or good light (not midday sun) and is surprisingly trouble free. The only annoyance is the taste of the new fronds is like manna for slugs! Once the fronds hardens it is of no interest to them but protection is advised for developing fronds.

as for snails, many plants that I plant are enjoyed by snails (such as Hostas), but I use the blue snail bait pellets

I meant the original post Dim, haha!

This is about Coniogrammes,....and they're not evergreen, and in some cases even snailpellets won't stop snails attacking this plant,...
Kind regards,
Remko.

Re: The Bamboo Ferns (Coniogramme)
Fair do's Remko. I'm no expert and am merely passing on info to try and bring these to people's attention. I've only got Coniogramme japonica and besides the label stating it's evergreen, it also says so here:griphuz wrote:I meant the original post Dim, haha!
