That is interesting Because I remember that Dave picked up a cooperi at Akamba but later he said he changed his mind and swapped it for an australis.

Maybe I should take a photo of mine for ID incase some of the labels were mixed up.

How do you tell the difference? Is it in the colour of the hair, because I think mine has dark hair.

Just checked the label... says "Cyathea australis, Rough Treefern" As hardy as Dicksonia antactica. As I said it came from Akamba and they had both Australis and Cooperii.

Simon, T.Pete is mine the same as your C.australis :?:

My plans might be dependent on what it is. I went for C.australis as it was supposed to be hardier than cooperii.

The plot thickens. Rough tree fern is one of the many names for Dicksonia fibrosa :? There have been a lot of Cooperii sold as Cyathea, it was a mix up and Cooperii grow like weeds relative to Australis.

If Don is right and it is Cooperi there not as hardy as Australis, have a read of this and it may help you to Id it.

Rough tree fern is used for Cyathea australis, referring to the sharp stipe bases. When used for Fibrosa it is referring to the rasp like feel of the underside of the fronds.
Dave I think you have a tree fern but then again it could be a Brugmansia mutant

Hmmm...interesting, and I was wondering why your plant was looking so 'full' Dave, and then I saw the pic of two growing points. Mine appears to have two plants in it as well, although one is much smaller than the other.

I'll go and take a look at my Cyatheas Cooperii and Australis and take some pics as well either in a bit or tommorow as soon as I come home when we have the most light

Thanks, take care

Pete

According to the link Tony, Cooperi has white and brown scales and Australis just has brown, so yours looks like a Cooperi as well. :ahhh!:

Its an important question because Australis will survive –8 but Cooperi will only take -4

Palmer, yours is a cooperi as well, I'm sorry.
If you've really seen australis, it's really different from cooperi and it's relatives (like brownii)
http://www.thefernhouse.co.uk/ shows the difference nicely...
Kind regards,
Remko.

Me next.....

I purchased this in Madeira as it was so cheap (3 Euros - about £2 at the time). In their usual style it was just called 'tree fern' so I don't know much about it!

Not sure if I need to bring it indoors - unheated greenhouse - or tucked against a wall outside? An ID would be good too :D

cheers all

John
