I'd say 99.9% its Cooperi . Australis would also have some spines / lumps on the frond stem

I wondered if it was, so have religiously dug it up each year and popped it in my heated greenhouse phew, glad I did. Thanks

So..... has anyone got a real Cyathea australis

My C cooperi's are still out side and will probably go into the polytunnel next weekend. I'll try to keep just frost free this winter as left unheated last winter it went down to -5.6C and I lost all the fronds. They did grow out again, but as it doesn't flush like Dicksonia antarctica it took until July to look reasonable again.

It seems the most important thing over winter is to NEVER LET DRY OUT

Yes and yes. In the dark corner of my garage. Last year it was fine there.

My three cooperi have put on superb growth this year considering they were just tiny plugs the year before. Fronds easily two feet now! They will be going in the polyhouse in the next week or so.

After looking through the post, you all seem to have cooperi except for pdid that I'm sure after looking at the pictures is Australis. Attached is a picture of one of my mature Australis, the stipes are like sand paper and the croziers have a dark brown snake skin like scales not fluffy looking like cooperi. When cooperi's fronds have finished they fall of on mature plants and produce a hexagonal shape on the up forming trunk, compared to Australis that the bottom of the stipe stays attached.
Hope this clears up any confusion.
