It didn't yet

Got all ready, pots lined up, compost mixed, knife poised, then suffered a hypoglycemic attack and had to stop. It was already approaching dusk so couldn't go back to it later once the sugar balance was restored

Yesterday, had to take my daughter back to Uni as her exams start this week, so no further work done.

Today, is the plan now as have the 3 days between the bank holidays off work icon_thumright
Best regards
Dave

The deed is done :ahhh!: But needed a saw to cut down the middle, as no way was a knife going to do it

Here before the operation was started

Tried using the knife but it was like cutting through wood, so needed to use the saw to make any progress. The once the trunk was sawed through a knife was used to cut through the roots. Here Siamese twins separated

Potted up and watered with seaweed extract to encourage rooting, and will try to keep in shade for a few weeks now.

I mean't to say use i wood saw, tough little beggers to cut thru. Certainly look better for splitting.

Any updates on these? Did both plants survive? Did you need to support them in their new pots?

I`ve recently bought a small Australis with what looks like two fernlings in the pot. It is smaller than both of yours so should be easier to separate. I just don`t want to kill them :!:

They are ok, well, have not died. The unfurling fronds continued to unfurl, but no new ones grown since. They stand up on their own, as I said earlier the trunk is more like wood

Phil,

some pics of the divided cyathea's

and the little fernlings i was telling you about, these are from last summers spores. Again, growing as a false double, i seperated these about 2 weeks ago. Luckily i was able to just tease these apart as opossed to cutting thru them. Again, no ill effects. They're consistently throwing out new fronds and the heads are packed with curlers .

Agreed, are they in pots in the ground or do you wrap them up to overwinter?

Cheers for the pics icon_thumleft

Thanks both. They come in over winter Phil and are in big hd pots. Made the mistake last winter of leaving them out one night toooo long. First frost browned off the fronds. They would have twice the fronds now if i'd brought them in. Soon grow out tho , the new fronds were emerging 2 months before any of the Dicksonia antarctica's

In New Zealand this type of plant are often sold in the nursery trade with two to the pot. If they have seemed
to fuse, the best idea if you want to seperate them is
to gradually prise them apart over a couple of Months,
then untangle the roots and repot them. If you
want to immediately plant them in the garden give
them some protection and support for a while or until they reestablish themselves. Most tree ferns are quite
tough but do not like to dry out after transplanting.
