i'm looking into getting a fairly large Trachycarpus.F for my garden this year.

regarding the roots is there any need for concern?
it will be planted at least 7 metres from my house.

i'm looking at this one as being best size versus money value

Don't plant right next to a wall, as the leaves will clatter against it, and can be annoying. Root wise a three feet will do.

I don't know if a good deal or not as I have never bought a large one

Just compared the price with the Palm Farm Online and it is roughly in line.

Their biggest size is sold out, and the next one down, i.e. one size smaller than yours is £135.

personally id go for between 20-40 quid per foot of trunk but then i was spoiled by having hardypalms on the doorstep.

it's really hard to tell what you are actually going to get when you can't see pictures of the actual plants.

i'd much prefer to pick my own but there is no where near me.

i need to mull on this one a while , any more suggestions for places to buy from?

Have you looked at the Outlet Centre http://www.outletgardencentre.co.uk/ ?

They used to have Trachycarpus, but I haven't been up that way for a couple of years.

They still have lots of palms at the outlet but the temps,have hit them badly. They haven't had lots of trachies for a while though. When they do the prices are normally superb. Personally I would wait until spring for centres to get new stock. I'll be calling in this week probably so will let you know.

I went to the Outlet today and they have LOADS of very healthy Palms of all sizes and good prices. They will be coming out in April although I'm sure you could buy and take away now.

Certainly well worth a visit this year in May when everything should be out on display!

That said, If you ask nicely they take you back stage and show you around anyway, if you go in the week when its quiet. Every member of staff LOVES plants and knows a great deal, and every one I speak to keeps exotics!

how strong a state of anchorage do these trees have?
i am worried of one being blown down in a gale when it gets tall/er.

do they have really strong roots?

Pretty much all palms put down massively deep roots (in the wild - to tap a water table that may be a long way down in dry places). In fact palms are regarded as a nightmare to move/remove for this reason - you either have to chop the roots (which either kills them or makes them sulk) or dig an impossibly deep hole.
