Re: Trachycarpus trunk question
Mr List your first link doesn't work but I'm guessing your Trachycarpus has been stretched by growing too quickly in shaded conditions thus giving a cone shaped trunk. It will probably sort itself out after a few years.
Other option is that it is not a fortunei put a different Trachycarpus species.

Re: Trachycarpus trunk question
i will take a picture of it tomorrow so you can see.
it is an .f ,got it from the palm centre.
if it has been stretched then would i be right in thinking it wont gain any height until after the trunk has evened out in thickness?

Re: Trachycarpus trunk question
The top of a Trachycarpus trunk isnt like the top of a Dicksonia antarctica where its full girth all the way, they all taper in at the top.
Im not really sure what you are after, did you expect the trunk to be full girth at the growing point ?

Re: Trachycarpus trunk question
Adrian is right. The way I would describe it is.... the top of the trunk always tapers as in your pics. only once it has grown enough trunk will the lower part be parallel, but it always has the tapered bit on top.

Re: Trachycarpus trunk question
well it seems like
http://www.hardytropicals.co.uk/forum/d ... &mode=view
that Trachycarpus is a very strange one.
it doesnt have hardly any taper and really small leaves.
ps
just noticed how fast the cordy caught up on trudi
i feel like a monkey-man staring at the monolith looking at pics of your Trachycarpus.
did you leave it to nature with yours dave or did you feed it etc..
