UPDATE ON MY RAPHIDOPHYLUM HYSTRIX. BILLDANGO.

Post by billdango »

As most forum members know i posted a thread about my R Hystrix.
This was planted as a 2 foot specimen in my back garden back in 2002 and since then has reached a hieght of nearly 5 feet and a width of about 6 feet.
In all that time it has never been wrapped or protected in any way and has survived some spells of severe cold.
It seems happy growing in semi shade under a canopy of trachycarpus palms and never gets fed or watered.
This palm is certainly worth seeking out and one that i would strongly recommend that all forum members try to get.
I know that they are expensive but try to buy the largest that you can afford.
Besides my specimen i know of only 2 others in Southampton and that is a shame as they really grow well here and more people should have one.

Nice one!

But I think some of us might dispute your definitions of "severe cold"

Anyone wishing to part with huge amounts of money then PM me as I have one thats been in the ground 10 years and must have been at least 10 years old when planted.
Im more than willing to dig it up at the right price :D .

No idea but then I have no idea of what mines worth either
I cant even remember what I paid for it at the time.

Cost aside, Rhapidophyllum hysterix is the hardiest palm of the lot.

Bill, you had better add another 3 to that Southampton list, I have got 3. Bought 2 from Palm Centre last year and then bought another this year from Palm Centre. They are about 1 foot tall each.

Last week I had to move the 2 I bought last year, redesigning the border. So hopefully they will survive being moved.

Good luck with them Andrew as unfortunately a small specimen that I bought from the palm center in 2002 died after I moved it to a new spot.

This had grown to about 18 inches in height and width.

I hope that you have more luck with yours.

That said, this palm does very well in Southampton so more should be grown here.

With your palms that makes 7 Hystrix plants in this City so lets keep spreading the word?
