Aggressive flush of Cycas revoluta on March 2012
Aggressive flush of Cycas revoluta on March 2012
Hi (Admin) Dave Brown,
For the first time I saw the birth of fronds on my Cycas revoluta when it tore its crown on 24th March 2012. What stood like a statue all those months is getting busy with a flush growth rate of 1 centimeter per day.
During this process dry spots are spreading all over. Is the plant eating itself or is it because of constant temperature of around 38*C since 2 weeks as well as for the following week ?

That is some heat,
Although they are tropical I would think 38C is a bit much, try a fleece or move it to shade.

Don't move during a flush, just keep well watered. It looks like it's planted anyway. The new growth saps energy from the old, hence the discolouration.

Oh gees, I forgot..
...Moving does weird things to the fronds.

Hi Dino, Kata,
It hardly gets 2 hours of sunlight in the mornings as it is surrounded by trees and my home.
Thanks for reminding me as not to move the Cycas during flush time as it would result in twisted fronds.
Anyway it can't be moved easily as I kept it in 18 inchs pot with proper holes and filled with layers of perlite and sand and buried the pot in the ground to make an illusion of lanscape.

Hi Kata, Dino,
This Cycas flush has shown an incredible growth rate of 1 inch per day. It would perhaps take 3 weeks to grow to its full length. Now the wait is over and this is the only new unknown bizzare thing that kept me waiting for so long in my life.

It's magical, bit like watching a Tree Fern unfurl.

Hi Kata,
I have to say hunto Japanese Cycads as when the Japanese say "hunto" they mean unbelievable. Its growth rate is a double fold as it reached 1 feet in 1 week.

Re: Aggressive flush of Cycas revoluta on March 2012
Absoultely one of the best flushes I have seen in a long time Mat,
I would show you mine but... do you like horrid brown fronds......no. Neither do I...........
It flushed four new fronds last year and then they went a horrid dirty brown, needless to say I turned to Trachycarpus f to satisfy my palm obsession these days.
Did you keep drowning it with water, or did you just leave it to do its thing?
Yours is a real hunto beauty though...well done Mat.
Hunto is now my new word...

Vegetarian, I think every Cycas has the ability to flush like mine. However the snowy winters will steal that moment from those who live there.
Kata, I usually replace 1 inch layer of perlite from the top of pot after sponge washing the old fronds with coffee water and keeping the leftover coffee mulch under perlite to get rid of scale insects. I pour a bucket of water on every sunday and on hot days I pour extra 2 jugs of water on thursdays. During flush time I replaced top 1 inch perlite layer with new perlite and poured water without coffee as I already used on it a week ago.
pH for Sago's is 6.0-6.5 as in this link http://apps.caes.uga.edu/urbanag/Home&G ... oryid=2239

I hardly managed to make a 720 HD video but still some clarity is missing through rendering technique.

Great photo's Mat.
How warm does it get during the flushing period of your Cycas?
Also, what minimum winter temps does it see?
