Beckenham Butia
Beckenham Butia
This one is on the main road, been there for many years, never protected despite the 4 harsh winters in a row.
Hope for mine to survive long-term then!

Haven't seen this for a few years, Roger. Good to know it's still there apparently thriving.
Re: Beckenham Butia
It looks quite leggy, looks almost as if it was grown in shade or lacks nutrients
Re: Beckenham Butia
Looks really good, especially with the underplanting of summer bedding!
What type of Butia is it?

Re: Beckenham Butia
I would take a guess at a butia yatay, but it may well be an odorata/capitata, nigel will know what it is. karl.

Eh? There's nothing wrong with itgreendragon wrote:It looks quite leggy, looks almost as if it was grown in shade or lacks nutrients
Re: Beckenham Butia
No theres nothing wrong with it
Not a yatay or it would be part of a compost heap long ago, probably planted as capitata but now regarded odorata.

Re: Beckenham Butia
They are extremely variable greendragon, and as Nigel would say, you could identify which area they come from by the difference in characteristics. I have 2 capitata/oderata that are completely different. You wouldn't believe they were the same species.greendragon wrote:If you think theres nothing wrong with it check this blog post: http://www.cloudforest.com/cafe/palms/b ... t2958.html

Re: Beckenham Butia
there quite nice palms really, the only palms i have that grow fat trunked palms are phoenix canariensis, i might buy one these, are they slow growing? what type of butia are those in the pictures?
Re: Beckenham Butia
The obvious difference is that the US pic shows the palm against a dark green background so shows well, whereas in the Beckenham pic, the foliage is 'burnt out' by the bright light behind so appears thin, even though it's not.greendragon wrote:If you think theres nothing wrong with it check this blog post: http://www.cloudforest.com/cafe/palms/b ... t2958.html
