Both grown from seed and then planted out I believe. Also the origins of most peoples waggies comes from this garden.

Perhaps the title should now be changed as I believe this one is actually the biggest & best unprotected Washie in the UK... Photographed by Kev Spence at Tresco Abbey Gardens in September 2012

I've been in north london a few times and it's fairly mild there. Even though i'm only around 30 odd miles away from the edmonton area, i have no chance of growing what they are.GREVILLE wrote:
North London seems to be a good place to grow them. There's one nearly as big with another EPS member at Edmonton.

Yes, a palm grown from seedling stage at the spot will be hardier then those imported from warmer areas like Spain or from under glass. Same with Trachycarpus fortunei here in the Low Countries. So for growing outside you should start with a small/very small specimem.Rob S wrote:Some would say that the unprotected Phoenix Theophrastii with nearly 1m of trunk is even more impressive in it's rarity alone! Oh yes and the Washingtonia was grown from seed and planted as a small plant, never protected and not imported like this from Spain! Think Dave will approve!
