Cordyline Red Star

Post by cheshirepalms »

Whats the absolute minimum this will take with and without protection? I've been protecting one I have in a pot, but not my ground planted one. I'm worried about tomorrows temperatures.

I lost mine in winter 2009, not sure of the temperature but the Chammy that was right next to it surved with damage to the spears so I'd guess it was somewhere around the -8c, possibly even slightly less.

Was that unprotected?

Yes, or at least unfleeced. It wass tucked into a corner at the onvergence of 2 6ft walls though so that offered enough protection to get the Chammy through 2009 and 2010 without fleece.

A cordyline that has amazed me past couple of year is the "Euro stripe"...

I got one for a couple of quid, so didn't bother about protecting it in 2010....and to my astonishment, it came back almost immediately after it defoliated.

Left it out and unprotected ever since.... icon_thumright

Any decent online seller recommendations?

Res Star is not hardy and all 3 of mine mushed dead, no comeback, in -5C. One that won't be replaced

Mine have seen 3 nights below -5 in the last week, and -7.2 last night, so I'll update you on how it responds.

There are also 2 large red stars in Ellesmere Port, stripped to the ground, but are growing from the base. I'm guessing from 2010. But I'd say they weren't protected judging by where are. eg not in gardens that are well cared for. So maybe you may have been unlucky with some plants. On the flip side they are suppose to be, and all plant labels suggest that they are much less hardy than australis.

Mine look ok at the moment and other ones in my street that were unprotected look ok too, there are some big ones in West Kirby that must be 10 years plus, that are branching at the crown.
