a lot chunkier than you see on stateside! does christchurch get a peiod of colder weather to make them slower growing. Prefer them like this!

Hi Nathan - I don't know how old these are, but they are taller than telegraph / power poles. My one is just a tiddler at 6.5 feet tall. - Good luck with your Washie, I think Washies do better in prolonged cool Winters than Phoenix canariensis do.

Hi Cordyman - Yes we do get cold Winters ( Have a look at average temps on signature below ) - They don't have any top growth during our winter, but in Auckland they grow 365-days a year.
The Washingtonia robusta's in Auckland New Zealand ( Which is as you know a much warmer climate than here ) look exactly the same, as i visit Auckland every year to see family.
That 'chunkiness' is what they look like all over New Zealand, its a much harsher climate than say SoCal.
The same can be said with Bangalows. They are more chunky here than in Queensland Australia.
The more exposed to the elements they are, the chunkier they get.

My one is 6.5 feet tall and is six years old.
Mine is approx 12ft tall with just over 6ft of trunk...

A bad shot of it now & in 2003, it was planted at 18 inches tall in 2002...

Good looking palms Rod :)

I have noticed that all cold grown palms have thicker trunks than their warm grown counterparts. Trachycarpus for instance grow thin trunks in the sub-tropics.

Mine is struggling due to a cold sunless winter but still manages to put on about 6 to 12 inches of trunk per year. It looks like it will be mostly defoliated again once the damage is removed.

Do you know what year that pic was taken Dave because that`s probably just slightly smaller than my outside planted Washie is at the moment. It would give me a rough idea as to how long it will take for mine to get as tall as yours is. If it survives.

Have you a picture of yours Andy? I'm growing seedlings on approx 2-3 yrs old to plant out late spring 2014.
