LARGE BUTIA CAPITATA PALMS IN THE UK.
LARGE BUTIA CAPITATA PALMS IN THE UK.
Time now to start another thread on large palms in the UK.
Heres a picture that I took down in sunny Southsea last year of a 6 foot tall Butia capitata.
This palm is still in perfect health and I will put an updated picture of it up on this thread as soon as i can correct the downsizing issue that i am having with my computer at the moment?

We can get a few more pictures of these palms from back posts as I know that most of these got through the last few winters with little or no damage.

I'm sure Nigel had a stunning Butia in his driveway border before he moved to Brazil although I believe the new owners of his house chainsawed it.
If I'm thinking of the right palm it was very impressive indeed.

Rob, I wonder if that Butia was bought and planted as a large specimen (I assume) it would take some years to get that size. They do tend to loose their elegant arching appearance with a big trunk.
I'm waiting for mine to take off.

Yes the Hampton Butia(Yatay?) was bought as a large plant but has still put on a fait bit of size and has been there for quite a few years now! Hard to tell from that pic Axel but i would have a guess that it's Odorata(Capitata), what do you think? There's a nice large Butia in Notting Hill which i posted a pic off on the EPS forum last summer however i recently lost most of the pics on my hard drive so can't re-upload i'm afraid and the plant is not visible on Street View!

Re: LARGE BUTIA CAPITATA PALMS IN THE UK.
Here is a recent one of my 2 larger Butia odorata.
Big Buti01 which has been decidedly yellowy since the 2010 freeze Buti02 recurved. In partial shade with a light overhead canopy.

Isn't this the sort of case where Nigel's Palmbooster would help?Dave Brown wrote:Big Buti01 which has been decidedly yellowy since the 2010 freeze

Love the blue colour of buti 2.I would have thought they would be the opposite way round i.e the palm in the shade would be less blue and more lax.
I also like the look of the pine tree.I need some advice on choosing something similar.I'll start another thread in the 'other exotics' section.
