hello everyone :D
I have a young butia capitata that although it is in a sheltered position I think I need to give it some protection over the winter months. I do not want to go OTT with the protection and want to do it on the cheap so no rope lights, heat cables ect.

Mine has come through the last 2 winters in apot which I bubblewrapped and a double fleece bag over the top.

My last 2 winter lows were -5 and -3c.

It's in the ground now so I'll just double bag it.

Just tie the leaves up into a spire with tie wire and then if its really cold just wrap it in fleece.

I did that with mine when it was a young palm now I only tie the leaves up if big snow is forecast.

You should be fine in Kent without protection but better safe than sorry i suppose! Mine has been growing outside for nearly 20yrs unprotected and has been fine up until now!

I don't think that the large Butia that is situated in London on the corner of Bromley road and Oakwood avenue is given any protection?

I googled it today and it seems okay up to August 2012.

Wether its still okay now I don't know.

Billdango - it's still there and it's fine! I go past it quite often (last time was Friday). Not protected at the mo.

Here's a link to a previous post on that Butia

I can try and take a more recent pix tho I tend to go past it on my driving lessons. Not sure how my instructor would react to 'do you mind if I pull over here to take a pix of that palm tree?'!!!

I'm presuming this is now Butia odorata, as my understanding is that the name capitata is now given to a tropical species with no cold resistance.
