Can anyone pass on advice for germinating Nanorrhops ritchiana, bag or pot method. I know I might have a very long wait. I have a small 6x6" reptile heat mat, would that do for the heat they require?

I had some start germinating in damp vermiculite in a sealed bag, after a month or two with some bottom heat from a fluorescent light fixture. If I remember correctly, they put down some very deep roots so will need deep pots. :D Good luck.

thanks, as I have 6 seeds, I'll do four in a vermiculite bag and two in small pots just to experiment. icon_thumleft

The bag method worked for me too. I gave away the one plant I kept last year. Still a small plant after 10 years

If they germinate, I'll probably be in a care home by the time any of them make a decent plant.

i have tried these,a couple of times but with same results.for each new leaf,it takes so long to grow that 2 die thus not lasting very long

From my experience, Callum would be in a care home by the time they'd be a decent size

I think the boot is on the other foot with this. Even the best care home for a Nanny will probably be not enough for its survival, so difficult are they

Perhaps I should sow some Phoenix Dactilifera, at least I could watch them grow!

So Nannorrhops ritchiana is not that hardy in the UK or is it they need warmer summers to grow well?

Mine didn't do too well when left out for a couple of summers and it was only just forming palmate leaves after 10 years from seed. I'm sure it wouldn't have come through a northern winter without heavy protection.
