Re: She Lives- yay (Nikau Recovery)
I almost planted mine out last year because I thought I may just get away with it. I didn't thank goodness. The only palm casualty was Phoenix rob. and I am so cross with myself for leaving it out.
Re: She Lives- yay (Nikau Recovery)
Dave, slight correction -Nikau is Maori for 'no coconuts'!

Paul, Ah I see, so it should be Ni - Kau
So my No coconuts Palm is recovering well
Carol, you should get away with this in a nornmal year, what sort of temps did you actually get. I heard that there was even -7C right on the coast

Re: Chatham Island Nikau
Just another update on the Nikau recovery. It is going to be a slow slooww process. Maybe taking 2 years to get back to it's former glory. Here it is last week, but at least is still making progress
Best regards

Dave, are you going to re-pot it? Do you thing new soil/bigger pot would speed it up?

Re: Chatham Island Nikau 'Oceana'
I'm not going to repot it this year now, as the roots are more than ample for the little bit of top growth. It's in quite a large concrete pot now, which was to stop it blowing over. It weighs a ton If I do repot it, it will be into a plastic pot which I will then bury in the ground to stop it blowing over. I'm not planning on planting it out as the lows we got last winter were not colder than average, just the number of frosts was above average. I'll overwinter it under cover this winter.
Best regards
Dave

Re: Chatham Island Nikau 'Oceana'
Did you get that from Dave Poole, Gary. They just don't generally seem available now. It seems odd that this is more hardy than Phoenix roebelenii, but just not available to try. They are sold for pence in New Zealand on their version of ebay, but you cannot register without a NZ email address.
Best regards

At last it is starting to look like a Nikau now. I'm not taking any chances now, so it came inside today.

Re: Chatham Island Nikau 'Oceana'
I know of a site based in the canary islands that sells a truly amazing range of plams (Canarius.com) and more... they do sell chatham island nikau palm aswell at not bad prices at all in Euros so you get an even better deal but they do have rediculusly high postage and packaging prices 30euros and above but the plants are very cheap and good quality. i have bought from them so can vouch for them
