Canary Island Date Palm multi headed in Northern Spain!

Post by medjool »

Hello from Medjool
last summer stopped in laredo cantabria,a pretty coastal resort that has a strange Rio esk quality ,sweeping sandy bay with mountain at one end, not far from santander ,i love my palms, so i had a quick drive around this interesting town, many canary palms, filifera, humilis etc.One palm caught my eye a large canary palm, perhaps a 10 metre trunk,on top crowded with hundreds of small leaves, all coming from different points, very strange,i would love to get up there to see whats going on!

It sounds like something has damaged the growing bud, but not killed it and it has produced several growing points. Do you have any pics :?:

I had this happen with a Cycas revoluta. summer drought killed the flush and it produced 2 growing points
Best regards

Hello Dave
No pictures im afraid, next year i may be in laredo again, and i will try to get some shots although it may be difficult to get a good shot as the palm is very tall and in a walled garden.
Thanks again

It is possible then to grow this humungus palm,

I got my seed from Tenerife last september but getting it to germinate is causing me a headache..

I am going back agin this september for heat treatment mainly.

Here is an image of my humungus lol situated in Tenerife (Golf Del Sur).

For me its a 'must have'.

In many years I would have said yes you can grow this, but this winter will have claimed most away from the coast or in the East. Normally would be coast or the West but not this year.

The ones at Southsea are almost as large as your pic.

But Dave,

Its been a most unusually cold witer this year in the UK would'nt you agree?

Its a long time since the 1963 freeze when I had icilcles on the inside of the winders..haahahahah and had to walk the yard to the loo :ahhh!:

I heard these trees were drought proof, can take all weathers.

A guy at Sun Palm trees sent this
It is rapid growing palm tree, with a straight single trunk. Has long arching, dark green, featherlike fronds. Prefers full sun or light shade. Drought tolerant, but does grow better with regular water. Can reach heights of 40 feet or more. Hardy to 22 degrees.
I dunno

They can tolerate drought but will not grow well, they are far happier in UK summer temperatures with plenty of water. They will be happy stood in a tray of water if potted. Don't try that with other palms but Phoenix are happy in water.

Don't know who Sun Palm Trees are but 22 degress is 22f or -5.5C
